After a busy Christmas break the children have been enthusiastic in their first few weeks of 2020. We have been learning all about the different continents with the help of a very catchy song. The continent we focused on especially was 'Antarctica'. The children were amazed by the different research we unearthed. We learned about Robert Falcon Scott, different animals and the job scientists do there. We have also begun learning about the different Oceans and Seas. In Art and DT we made our own clay penguins and painted them. This helped informed our Science work where we have been investigating properties of materials and understanding the terms 'man-made' and 'natural'. In P.E. we have been exploring different ways of moving by learning and range of dances. Chestnut class's favourite was our 'Disco' routine. Well done everyone !
We have done so much in the last 9 weeks and the children have worked incredibly hard.
We began our topic, 'Castles and Dragons' ! We have looked at the features of a castle and where and why they were built. We also looked at the Battle of Hastings and voted for who we wanted to win. Chestnut class decided that King Harold should stay as King so they were disappointed to learn that he was defeated. We re-enacted the Battle and the children were enthralled.
In Science we have been learning all about the human body. We have labelled body parts we can see and body parts that we cannot see. The children have learned all about the heart and how it works as well as the lungs. We also made our own set of lungs using straws and bags.
We been learning about addition and subtraction in Maths, as well as recapping our 2d shapes and starting some measuring.
The highlight of our half term have been our wonderful trips! We've been to Tamworth Castle, to St Denys Church and to Marlborough Church.
What a busy half term!
Have a wonderful Christmas all !
Autumn part 1
We have had a busy start to our year in Chestnut class !
The children have all settled, and have been renewing and creating many friendships.
Our Topic this half term has been 'Islands and Seas'. We have been learning the differences between Human and Physical Geography, what makes an island and what humans and animals need to survive. The children have even designed and labelled their own island and worked together to create a Year 2 papier mache giant island !
In Maths, we have been working on place value, partitioning and working with 2 digit numbers. We have begun counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s and will continue working on this through the year. We have just begun looking at adding 2 digit numbers and will keep looking at this into the next half term.
In English, we have been having daily phonics sessions as well as using the 'Talk for Writing' approach to really get to know the story of 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. The finale of this was when the children wrote their own incredible versions of the story. Afterwards they felt 'jubilant' ! In the last week of half term we have looked at using adjectives and similes within poetry, and have written our own acrostic Harvest poems. They were fabulous ! Please come in and see them if you have chance !
In P.E. we have been working on jumping, spinning and turning in Gymnastics, and have absolutely loved our Sports Coach session on a Friday, where we've been learning the skills needed to play Tag Rugby !
A very, busy half term
