Homework tips

The most important thing for you to do with your year 1 child is to read.  In Elm class, they will be able to change their books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Please read each book with your child at least twice before asking them to change them.  It is important to read stories to your child as well as asking them to read - children love to hear their parents read them stories.

Homework is set on a Friday to be returned by the following Thursday. It is normally on a maths theme based on the week's work but it will occasionally link into topic or other subjects. Each holiday children will bring home their holiday homework book instead.

Instead of spelling tests, this year the children will be given phonics homework to be completed each week. This will take the form of a list of words that link to a sound that they have learnt that week. We expect the children to practice reading the words at least three times to an adult, by saying each sound in the word and then blending the sounds to read the whole word. The children can draw the sound buttons underneath the word to help them. There will be a mix of real and alien (nonsense) words for the children to read and the children could identify the alien words by colouring them in or drawing a small picture of an alien beside them. As an extension, the children could write any other words that contain the same sound that they find in their reading books into their phonics books.

Please could children bring all phonic books and homework back by each Thursday as spelling tests will be completed in the back of the spelling books.
