Homework tips

The most important thing for you to do with your year 1 child is to read.  In Elm class, they will be able to change their books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Please read each book with your child at least twice before asking them to change them.  It is important to read stories to your child as well as asking them to read - children love to hear their parents read them stories.

Homework is set on a Friday to be returned by the following Thursday. It is normally on a maths theme based on the week's work but it will occasionally link into topic or other subjects. Each holiday children will bring home their holiday homework book instead.

Spelling tests are also set each Friday with spelling tests on Thursdays the following week. Spellings are normally a combination of phonic spelling patterns and keywords. We encourage children to practice their spellings using look, cover, write, check. It can help to underline the spelling patterns for those words to encourage children to identify the phonic patterns. Even copying words or using different colours to write with can help children to learn their spellings.

Please could children bring all spelling books and homework back by each Thursday as spelling tests will be completed in the back of the spelling books.
